Pair of columnar Blue John Table Lamps with square plinths
Pair of columnar Blue John Table Lamps with square plinths:
the tapering shafts with striking horizontal striations of purple and
amber, with square tops and stepped plinths; 19th Century,
with later electrical fitments. Dimensions are for the Blue John.
Made from a rare and precious colour-banded form of fluorspa, mined
in a single hill in Derbyshire. Its name is thought to derive from the
French ‘bleu jaune’ (blue yellow), referring to its lustrous jewel tones.
Much prized in the 18th Century.
