Pair of Directoire gilded & black bronze three light Candelabra:
the black bronze classical robed maidens supporting cornucopia issuing foliate scrolled branches; the central stems entwined with leaves and grapes; their white marble socles decorated with gilded spheres and chain.
Circa 1790 and restored. See similar designs Vergoldette Bronzen p.282-3.

Directoire

Transitional period from 1793 to 1799, following the French Revolution of 1789, during which styles became more austere, after the execution of Louis XVI. Motifs reflected Napoleon's Egyptian campaign with sphinxes, urns and griffins.

cornucopia

Classical 'horn of plenty', symbolising prosperity and opulence. Often used in pairs as mantlepiece ornaments.
