Pair of gilded brass Art Nouveau Wall Lights with ‘Powell’s’ shades: the ornamental back-plate with heart-shaped cut-outs; the curving branch with repoussé arabesque decoration, suspending swirled glass shades in the style of Powell’s of Whitefriars. Circa 1890 and restored.

Powell, James & Sons
James Powell took over the Whitefriars Glass Works in London in 1834 and began a revival of handblown glass. Powells produced austerely elegant glasses for Arts & Crafts designer Philip Webb and opalescent shades for W.A.S.Benson's light fittings.
Art Nouveau
Late 19th and early 20th Century style originating in France and Belgium. Its influence spread all over Europe and America through periodicals like the Studio magazine. Typical characteristics were the whiplash, stylised swirling flower and plant motifs, female forms and sometimes sinister-looking insects. See Gallé, Lalique, Daum..
