Pair of Golden Pheasant and Parrot Lamps in Venetian polychrome glass beadwork:
the birds composed of numerous tiny multi-coloured Venetian glass beads with elaborately curling tail feathers; mounted on gilt-lacquered brass stands with twin interior lamp bulbs and working ornamental switches. Late 19th/Early 20th Century, restored and wired for electricity.
The Golden or Chinese Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) was introduced into Europe at this time from the Far East, when the birds were highly prized for their exotic appearance and rarity. Exotic birds were displayed in large, elaborate aviaries on the country estates of landed gentry.
