the ‘egg’ with acorn and oakleaf finial, opening to a white opaline glass scent bottle in a repoussé leaf setting; on a looped tripod stand with ring and leaf decoration. French, Palais Royal; circa 1880 and restored.

Fine semi-opaque, white and coloured glass, developed by the French in the first half of the 19th century, with a translucent quality.
gilded, gilt
A very thin layer of gold applied to brass or bronze.
finial
Ornament forming a finishing flourish.
repoussé
Imprinted design, made by hammering thin brass or copper over a wooden mould. This technique was much-used in Arts and Crafts metalwork as it shows the toolmarks of the craftsman.
