Glossary Words

Mordan, Sampson

Sampson Mordon (1790-1843), a British silversmith and co-inventor of the first mechanical pencil with his partner John Hawkins. Mordan quickly bought out Hawkins and in 1823 and registered his first silver mark. He had a reputation for very fine quality goods with intriguing engineering mechanisms, including scent bottles, inkwells, letter scales and jewellery boxes. His sons continued the London based business until 1941, when the factory was destroyed by bombs in the London blitz.
