Unusually small blue opaline glass egg-shaped Box on gilded mount:
with centre hinged mount and flower finial; with pierced metal tri-form repoussé stand. French, Palais Royal, circa 1880 and restored.

opaline

Fine semi-opaque, white and coloured glass, developed by the French in the first half of the 19th century, with a translucent quality.

gilded, gilt

A very thin layer of gold applied to brass or bronze.

Ornament forming a finishing flourish.

repoussé

Imprinted design, made by hammering thin brass or copper over a wooden mould. This technique was much-used in Arts and Crafts metalwork as it shows the toolmarks of the craftsman.
