Suite of four French Art Deco opalescent glass and gilt Plafonniers:
relief moulded with stylised circular flowers motif, the gilt metal mount with circlet of threaded facet-cut glass beads.
Circa 1930, restored and rewired with inner lamps.

Art Déco

A popular movement in the 1920s and 30s, promoted by Ruhlmann and other great Paris furniture manufacturers, and the big department stores. The style was influenced by Aztec and Egyptian design, the Ballets Russes, Hollywood musicals and the new ocean-going liners. It featured stepped and geometric designs, sunrays and chevrons.

opalescent

A name for streaked, white to yellowy-green, semi-transparent glass, popular in the late 19th century, as in the glass shades made by Powell's of Whitefriars. Also known as vaseline glass.

gilded, gilt

A very thin layer of gold applied to brass or bronze.
