Leaf-cut glass Chandelier with twleve candle branches on two tiers; the baluster stem with flower-bud shaped pieces; with leaf cutting to body bowl, candle pans and stem; dressed with graduated chains of ‘single star’ prisms and large facet-cut pointed finial. Circa 1880, and restored.

Glossary Words
cut glass
Often now referred to as 'crystal', the glass was blown and shaped, then passed to a specialist cutter, who would polish and cut patterns to enhance its brilliance.
baluster
A term used to describe the stems of chandeliers, meaning shaped like a balustrade; curvaceous, with a series of urns.
'single star' prisms
Round cut-glass prism, with flat front and star-cut back. Used on early 19th century Regency chandeliers. Later used extensively by Osler for their drapery in the late 19th century.
finial
Ornament forming a finishing flourish.
